A small black wooden box, the third major artifact the party stumbles into during Arc I. Once per day its bearer can pull one non-magical item from it, but there’s a 50% chance of instead unleashing horrific monsters that linger for about a week. Can only be destroyed by having its bearer survive three waves of its summoned monsters and then tricking a gold dragon into crushing it (which kills the dragon too).
History
- Conjured into Ozan’s hands by a near-maximum d1000 Whimsy Wall roll 2020-03-16 @ 00:18:15.
- Everyone who examines it must make a DC 30 will save; Jake fails and is magically compelled to seize and guard it from everyone else, including by violence 2020-03-16 @ 00:21:18–00:27:47.
- Ozan identifies it via a knowledge check as the legendary Apocalypse Box and explains its powers before ceding it to Jake 2020-03-16 @ 00:28:35.
- Two openings nearly summon six Shoggoths each (CR19) before a third reroll produces a bottle of scotch instead 2020-03-16 @ 00:41:19–00:43:48.
- Donnie reveals the destruction method: three survived monster-waves, then a gold dragon crushing it 2020-03-16 @ 00:44:54.
- Jake’s compulsion to open it daily, under an increasingly hard will save, becomes a life-threatening crisis; the party considers killing him to stop it 2020-03-24 @ 00:30:49–00:39:46.
- The curse ends when Jake dies and is reborn a Paladin of Pelor — he is “no longer compelled to carry/open the Apocalypse Box” 2020-03-24 @ 02:39:50.
- Deliberately left unexamined and forgotten in someone’s bag going forward 2020-03-25 @ 02:45:46.
- Jake dares Pat (the DM, in-game as a bit) to open it; it turns out to contain only Pat’s own wallet, a joke 2020-04-13 @ 01:25:49.
Unresolved
The box itself is never destroyed — only its curse on its bearer is lifted. Its ultimate fate is not addressed again in the recorded sessions.
